NOTICE – WI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORATION

Public Involvement Meeting for US 53/ WIS 77 improvement project in Washburn County

Meeting will provide project information and encourage community feedback.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northwest Region will hold a public involvement meeting to discuss improvements to US 53/ WIS77 interchange in the village of Minong in Washburn County. The meeting is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at the Jack Link’s Aquatic and Activity Center located at 714 W Hokah St, Minong, Wisconsin 54859.

The meeting will follow an open house format with a presentation at 6:00 p.m. Exhibits showing the plan concepts will be on display. Information about the safety benefits, the traffic routing, alternative costs, environmental and land impacts and oversize load accommodation will be presented. Project representatives will be available to discuss the project on an individual basis.

The US 53/ WIS 77 intersection has a significant history of severe, right angle crashes. To address these safety concerns, WisDOT is considering two different solutions. The first alternative involves a J-turn and the second includes an Offset Tee. Both alternatives reduce the number of vehicle conflict points and are expected to significantly improve safety.

J-turn

  • Through and left-turning traffic on WIS 77 are redirected to make a right turn onto US 53, followed by a U-turn
  • All other movements remain the same, including the left and right turns from US 53 and the right turn from WIS 77

Offset Tee

  • East leg of WIS 77 would be realigned to the south and intersect with US 53 about 800 feet south of existing intersection
  • Creates two 3-way intersections of US 53 and WIS 77

Construction is expected to be scheduled in the next three to four years, as early as 2021.

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting, provide input and ask questions concerning the project. WisDOT representatives will be available to discuss the project and answer questions.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, or would like more information, contact Dan Bieberitz, Traffic Engineer at (715) 836-2823. Written comments regarding the project can be mailed to Dan Bieberitz at 718 W. Clairemont Avenue, Eau Claire, WI 54701.

Citizens who are hearing-impaired and require an interpreter may request one by contacting Diana Maas at least three working days prior to the meeting via the Wisconsin Telecommunications Relay System (dial 711).
